Random Thoughts About My Hair

Post alert. If you’re having a tough day, this maybe too hard to read especially if you don’t read to the end (the inspiring part). I hope it gets better, by the way. Don’t worry, I’ll be back next week with news about the book!! Yes, I said book. For a long time now, I’ve been mad at my hair. It started at fortyish. I told myself all the things everyone else says. It’s too thin. It’s hormones. Having the kids ruined it. Need more Biotin. Using the wrong shampoo. My water is too hard…. And on and on and…

Grace

Whew. One down, and one to go—graduations, that is. My first-born daughter, Annie, graduated from college about a week ago. Her name was always going to be Annie, by the way. In fact, after my grandmother, Annie Ruth, died, I sat in the limousine at the funeral and told my husband that our first child would be a girl, and we would name her Annie. Three months later, I was pregnant with a daughter—Annie. It was when Annie turned two that I realized that the daughter I had named after my grandmother was actually Annie, my grandmother. I had fallen asleep with Annie…

What To Do When You Smell Regret on Your Breath…

Got regret? Welcome to my world. I wish I knew a lot less about this topic. However, as awful as it feels to face regret, it is the most powerful, beautiful work we do. Regret is that painful feeling linked with an idea that we could have done something differently—that awful feeling that it’s too late to repair the mistakes we feel we’ve made. Regret is the outcome of the disease I call, “I’m not doing me very well.” We all suffer from regret, because acting from our own integrity is not so easy. In fact, all regretful choices stem from this one idea:…

Happy EARTH DAY!!!

This is my newest baby. She is a mimicry succulent native to Africa. I bought her in celebration of Earth Day. As a scientist and spiritual teacher, I spent the day buying and planting plants, not protesting. I practice non-resistance now, but I also believe that to ignore what scientists are telling us about the Earth is folly. Whatever you may be hearing about global warming—and there is much conjecture for sure—I want you to know that the gatekeepers of truth are scientists. They don’t just get to guess at things, they have to prove their ideas work. If you are skeptical of scientific findings, so are…

Still Overdoing? My Cautionary Tale

Re-post alert. I am re-posting my cautionary tale about radical overdoing because not only is it something I needed to hear again, it is something that seems many may need to hear again.  I just saw one of my favorite personal trainers from The Biggest Loser, Bob Harper, talking about his massive heart attack at age 51. The fitness expert telling us all how to take care of ourselves—Bob Harper has empowered thousands of people—beautifully and openly admitted that he was not taking as good of care of himself as he should have been. Before his massive heart attack, he acknowledged ignoring many warning signs of his own…

F+

An F+ is the grade I give all spiritual teachers (including myself)  for making spiritual healing sound too hard, too boring, and too complicated. The “F” is for the super-confusing vernacular and terminology we use for things, and the “+” is because at least we all say it really nicely 🙂 Today, let’s talk about the number one word that is over-used and misused. You guessed it: “mindfulness.” Everyone is being “mindful” these days. It’s the new “busy.” Yet most people don’t really know what “mindful” means. To further confuse matters (and our clients) we say things like, “Get out of…

Hate is Hate is Hate is Hate

Okay, I’m no Lin-Manuel Miranda, and this piece will not be as eloquent, but alas, I’m not sure many people realize what the feeling of hate is metaphysically, and how to stop hate. The dictionary defines hate as the intense or passionate dislike for someone. This definition is technically true, if you understand that “someone” is yourself. Hate is feeling of a spiritual energy block within us that arises we witness behavior in other people that we don’t understand. Hate is a symptom of mind-body imbalance within us, and that’s what it tells the world when we use hateful words. Whether you hate broccoli, or another human, an…
